How We Lay the Ground for Artificial Grass: A Sneak Peek

Preparing the ground is one of the most difficult and complicated phases of artificial grass installation in Boston. In general, our professional installers observe the following steps:

  • 1. We clear out the existing grass.

Artificial turf installation usually begins by removing the natural grass from your lawn. Time to say goodbye to all that hassle and stress! In some cases, our installers may need to remove the organics to a depth of 2 inches or 40-50 mm to give space to the artificial turf.

  • 2. We then clean out the installation site.

After clearing out all the natural grass in the area, we usually proceed to cleaning up the space where the synthetic turf will be placed. This includes removing rocks, weeds and other debris from the installation site. This ensures that the ground is flat and no debris will create unwanted slopes or wrinkles in the turf.

  • 3. The base layer comes next.

This step depends on the condition of the ground and the type of the soil. For instance, sandy soil already offers free drainage so in general, only a 50-mm base made of sharp sand is needed.

For clay-based soils, our installers may add an additional stone layer subbase of 10-15mm to give way for drainage. This is a very important consideration with artificial grass for dogs, since efficient drainage is crucial to keep the turf clean and odor-free.

Again, this all depends on the soil conditions on your property. We will adjust the base specifications after we’ve analyzed your lawn.

  • 4. Laying down a protective layer or weed membrane.

Artificial turf in Boston is a huge investment, so the turf layer has to be protected as much as possible. As a result, we may add a geotextile layer to protect it from weeds or other plants that may grow beneath it and break through the turf backing. This is optional, but highly recommended.

  • 5. Pre-installing additional features.

If you want to add other features on your new lawn such as paths, benches, sheds or play areas, inform us ahead of time. This way, we have time to plan out where and how to install the hardscapes and softscapes so there’s enough space for all of them plus the synthetic turf.

This is especially important if you want to incorporate live trees and shrubs with artificial grass in Boston, because we will have to make sure that the plants receive enough nutrients and oxygen beneath the turf.
